Prof. Marlene Rose
Professor Rose trained as a basic scientist and obtained her PhD in Immunology from Edinburgh University. She has been Head of the Transplant Immunology Department at Harefield Hospital since 1982. Harefield Hospital was one of the first centres in the world to perform thoracic organ transplantation and the hospital has carried out a very large number of procedures since the 1980s. The hospital is one of the post-graduate training centres attached to Imperial College. Marlene was made a Professor Transplant Immunology of Imperial College London, in 2000, co-terminus with the Harefield appointment.
Professor Rose heads the Tissue Typing Dept at Harefield which is responsible for monitoring antibodies in the transplant recipients. Marlene has published over 100 peer review papers about the Immunology of rejection of cardiac and lung allografts and published seminal work about the role of antibodies. In particular she has focussed on the Immunology of cardiac allograft vasculopathy, the role of antibodies and interactions between the immune response and endothelial cells. Professor Rose was part of the 2007/2008 program committee for the International Society of Heart and Lung Transplantation, has been Chair of the Basic Science/Pathology Council, was a member of the Heart Transplant Steering group that met in 2004 to revise the diagnosis of heart rejection, and is an associate editor of the Journal of Heart and Lung Transplantation.
