Dr Douglas W. Hanto, M.D., Ph.D.
Douglas W. Hanto, M.D., Ph.D. is Chief, Division of Transplantation, Department of Surgery at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, and Lewis Thomas Professor of Surgery, Harvard Medical School. He received his M.D. from the University of Arizona College of Medicine and Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota, where he completed his surgical training, research fellowship, and transplant fellowship.
He was on the faculty at Washington University in St. Louis from 1985-1991 and the University of Cincinnati from 1991-2001 before moving to Boston in 2001. He is an active clinical transplant and hepatobiliary surgeon. He has had a longstanding interest in the classification and pathogenesis of post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorders and how this understanding influences treatment and prevention. His current laboratory research interests are focused on the prevention of ischemia reperfusion injury in organ transplantation, manifest as delayed graft function, and rejection using carbon monoxide. He has been interested in the ethical issues facing transplantation, particularly solicitation of organ donors, buying and selling of organs, and transplant tourism. He is past Chair of the Ethics Committee of the American Society of Transplant Surgeons and currently serves as a member of the United Network for Organ Sharing Ethics Committee and the Ethics Committee of The Transplantation Society (International). He is also on the Governing Board of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases.
Dr Kevin J. O'Connor
Kevin J. O'Connor is the Senior Vice President for the New England Organ Bank (NEOB), one of the largest U.S. Organ Procurement Organizations, where he oversees clinical activities including organ donor management and organ allocation. He served as the Co-Director for the U.S. Organ Donation & Transplantation Breakthrough Collaborative in 2005 through 2007, and was a Faculty Member for the U.S. Organ Donation Breakthrough Collaborative in 2003 and 2004.
He is the At-Large Member on the Executive Committee for the Association of Organ Procurement Organizations (AOPO). He is a member of the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) Kidney Committee. He has served on the UNOS Kidney Allocation Review Subcommittee since 2004.
He has authored three textbook chapters and numerous papers on topics including donor evaluation, donor management, and donation after cardiac death. He holds an M.S. degree from Boston College, and B.S. from Northeastern University in Boston, MA. He is a graduate of the Northeastern University Physician Assistant Program. He is a Certified Procurement Transplant Coordinator. In 2005, he was the recipient of the AOPO/AIG Excellence in Leadership Award. Prior to joining NEOB, he worked as a Surgical PA in Cardiothoracic Surgery at New England Medical Center in Boston, MA.
Dr Annika Tibell
Annika Tibell M.D., Ph.D., is Head of the Department of Transplantation Surgery at Karolinska University Hospital, Stockholm, Sweden, and Chair of the Ethics Committee of the Transplantation Society.
She is a member of Council in the European Society for Organ Transplantation, the Swedish Transplantation Society Council and the International Xenotransplantation Association.
She has published more than 100 articles, 6 book chapters and 9 official reports. Her main areas of interest are ethics within the fields of organ donation and transplantation, organ donation, pancreas and islet transplantation and xenotransplantation.
