Elaine F. Reed, Ph.D.
Dr. Elaine F. Reed is a Professor in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and Director of the UCLA Immunogenetics Center, David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles.
Dr. Reed's research interests are focused on studying mechanisms of chronic allograft rejection. Numerous studies have shown that post-transplant development of anti-donor HLA antibodies is associated with increased risk of acute and chronic rejection.
Studies from her research group have demonstrated that binding of antibodies to HLA class I and class II molecules on endothelial and smooth muscle cells transduces signals that stimulates increased phosphorylation of intracellular proteins, induction of fibroblast growth factor receptor expression and cell proliferation. These studies suggest anti-HLA antibodies can play a key role in the initiation of proliferative signals, which stimulate the development of myointimal hyperplasia associated with chronic rejection of human allografts. Understanding this mechanism should permit the development of new therapeutic modalities for the treatment and prevention of transplant atherosclerosis and extending the functional life of transplanted organs.
