Dr Peter Stock
Dr. Peter Stock is Professor of Surgery and a multi-organ transplant surgeon at the University of California, San Francisco.
Dr. Stock is clinically active in liver, kidney and pancreas transplantation, as well as the training of surgical residents and transplant fellows. He heads up the Solid Organ Pancreas Transplant Program as well as the Pancreatic Islet Program.He is the Surgical Director of the Pediatric Renal Transplant Program.
Dr. Stock's current basic science research interests involve the induction of transplantation tolerance to block both alloimmunity as well as recurrent autoimmunity following solid organ pancreas and pancreatic islet transplantation. Finally, he is the principal investigator on a study to determine the safety and efficacy of solid organ transplantation in the HIV positive recipient.
CAMILLO RICORDI, M.D.
Camillo Ricordi is Professor of Surgery, Medicine, Biomedical Engineering, Microbiology and Immunology. He is also Chief of the Division of Cellular Transplantation and Director of the Diabetes Research Institute at the University of Miami.
His research objective is to develop a cure for Type 1 Diabetes, and he is known for pioneering islet isolation techniques that are now used worldwide and for performing the first successful series of human islet allografts. Dr. Ricordi's research interests include induction of immune tolerance, cellular therapies, stem cells and regenerative medicine strategies.
Founder and president of the CTS and IPITA, he currently is a councillor of The Transplantation Society, after serving on the council of the ASTS. He has been serving on several NIH Expert Panels, Strategic Planning committees, on the NCRR Islet Cell Resources Executive Committee, as Chairperson of the NIH Clinical Islet Transplant Consortium and as President of the Board of the Mediterranean Institute for Transplantation and Advanced Therapies (ISMETT, Italy).
Honors and awards include 2001 World Prize of Surgery (Geneva); 2002 Outstanding Scientific Achievement Award (ADA); 2006 Rotary International Paul Harris Fellowship Award; and 2008 NIAF Special Achievement Award. Dr. Ricordi has authored over 500 scientific publications.
Prof Rodolfo Alejandro
Rodolfo Alejandro, M.D., is a Professor of Medicine at the University of Miller Miami School of Medicine, and Director of Clinical Islet Transplantation, Director of Metabolic Studies Core and Responsible Head for the Islet Cell Processing Facility at the Diabetes Research Institute.
He also serves as Associate Program Director for the General Clinical Research Center at the University of Miami/Veterans Administration Medical Center.
One of the top scientists involved in islet transplantation, Dr. Alejandro combines years of extensive research and clinical experience. He has contributed significantly to standardizing islet evaluation, and his observations on islet transplantation in large animal models have helped spark the renewed interest in clinical islet transplantation trials.
An author and co-author of many works in the field of diabetes, Dr. Alejandro sits on numerous editorial boards, and is the recipient of the Alpha Omega Alpha and the Pfizer Scholars Award in diabetes.
