Dr Marina Bereguer
Born in Spain in 1967, Marina Berenguer accomplished Primary and Secondary School studies at the French School in Valencia, Spain, and a Senior exchange-student year in the U.S. In 1991 she obtained the Medical degree in the University of Valencia Medical School, and in 1994 the US Certification through the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates. She earned the Degree of Specialist in Hepato-Gastroenterology by the Spanish National Residency program in 1995. From 1997 to 1999 she performed a fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco under the mentorship of Dr. Teresa L. Wright, granted by the Spanish Association for the Study of the Liver.
Back in Europe, she was appointed Clinical Specialist and earned the title of Doctor in Medicine and Surgery with the Thesis "Hepatitis C following liver transplantation: natural history and factors associated with unfavorable outcome" in 2001. In 2005 she was appointed Associate Professor of Medicine and recently obtained the Spanish National Habilitation for Professor of Medicine. In most recent years, she has been recognized, both in Spain and at the international level, for her important contributions in the field of the natural history of post-transplantation HCV disease.
Dr. Federico G. Villamil
Dr. Federico G. Villamil is currently Director of Hepatology and Medical Director of Liver Transplantation at Fundación Favaloro in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Professor of Medicine at Favaloro University and President of the Foundation for Research and Education in Liver Diseases (FUNDIEH). At present, he is member of the Executive Council of the International Association for the Study of the Liver (IASL), International Liver Transplantation Society (ILTS), and The Transplantation Society (TTS).
Dr. Villamil was President of ILTS in 2003, of the Argentina Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AAEEH) in 1997 and Argentina Society of Transplantation (SAT) in 2004. Currently he is Vice-President of IASL and member of the Publications Committee of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD). He also served as Associate Editor of Liver Transplantation and Liver International.
Dr. Villamil has delivered more than 400 conferences on different aspects of hepatology and liver transplantation and presented more than 300 abstracts in society meetings and congresses. He has published 60 articles and 14 book chapters. The main areas of his research and interest have been liver transplantation for hepatitis B and C, living-donor liver transplantation, fulminant hepatic failure, MELD and immunosuppression.
