Professor Stefan G. Hübscher
Stefan Hübscher is Professor of Hepatic Pathology at the University of Birmingham and Consultant Histopathologist at the University Hospital Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust.
Clinical interests are mainly focused on liver pathology, including the pathology of liver transplantation. Pathology of hepatic, biliary and pancreatic malignancy is the other major area of clinical activity.
Areas of research interest include: histological studies of liver allograft rejection, disease recurrence and other late complications following liver transplantation; immune mechanisms in liver disease; pathogenetic mechanisms in vanishing bile duct diseases; hepatic stem cells and pathogenesis of hepatitis C virus infection . Published works include more than 150 papers in peer-reviewed journals, 30 invited review articles and 19 book chapters.
Prof Hübscher has been a member and co-chairman of three International Working Parties producing consensus documents for grading and a staging liver allograft rejection (the Banff schema) and more recently providing recommendations for the assessment of late post-transplant liver biopsies. He is currently a member of the Editorial Boards for Liver Transplantation and World Journal of Gastroenterology.

Surgical residency under the lead of Prof.J.A.GRUWEZ at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (KUL) in Leuven,B and at the H.Heine Universtät in Dusseldorf,G under the lead of Professors K.KREMER and W.SANDMANN.
Chief residency under the direction of Professors PJ.KESTENS and JB.OTTE at UCL in Brussels. Active involvement since the beginning of the surgical activity in 1975, in the field of organ transplantation.
Hepatobiliopancreatic and (liver) transplantation fellowship at the Hôpital Paul Brousse in Paris, (F) under the direction of Prof. H. BISMUTH and at University Pittsburgh Medical Centre (UPMC) in Pittsburgh, PA, USA under the direction of Prof.Th.E. STARZL
This extensive surgical training and specialization had the particularity to have been done in four completely different, cultural and linguistic, environments.
Responsibility in transplant surgery and medicine since 1983.
